Interpretation:
The magnitude for the charge on an electron is to be determined.
Concept introduction:
Electrons are negatively charged particles that revolve around the dense and positively charged center called the nucleus in an atom. Millikan's oil drop experiment included observing the movement of oil droplets in an apparatus containing electrically charged plates and a source of X-ray. The X-rays knocked out electrons from the gas molecules and these electrons stuck to the oil droplets falling through a nozzle. Each oil droplet had a different number of electrons stuck to it. By measuring the mass and charge of each oil droplet, Millikan concluded that the total charge on each droplet was a whole number multiple of a minimum charge. The magnitude of the minimum charge was the charge of an electron.
