Electronegativity is a term expressing ability of atoms of the element to attract shared pair of electrons of atoms of another element.

When two elements have a high difference in its electronegativity, then the transfer of valance electrons from the element with low electronegativity to the element with electronegativity takes place and result in the formation of ionic bond.

Covalent bonding takes place between the atoms with low electronegativity difference. Here, the sharing of electron/s takes place between the two atoms.
