Answer to Problem 2.1EAA

Engineer’s job role- Thermal and Structural Analyst.

Explanation of Solution

I met a Mechanical Engineer, who works as a Thermal and Structural Analyst. The role requires carrying out analyses of different structures to determine the effect of loads on them. His job requires him to carry out Thermal and Structural analysis of Turbochargers.

When a turbocharger has to be produced, it has to undergo various stages such as design, drafting, analysis, testing and manufacturing. Analysis is a critical phase where the results are used to determine the impact of Thermal and Structural loads on Turbo chargers. In other words, the results help in evaluating whether the product will be able to withstand stresses and loads expected of it.

Structural Analysis incorporates the field of Strength of Materials, Applied Mathematics and Material Science to compute a structure’s deformations, internal forces, stresses, and support reactions. Modern computational techniques such as Finite Element Methods have been used for complex 3D models, wherein a component is divided into finite elements to get the results. So, the job requires him to use Finite Element Methods (FEM) along with traditional hand calculations to carry out the Thermal and Structural analysis of turbochargers and to get the results. He has to apply his Thermodynamics, Strength of Materials and Mechanical Vibrations knowledge while carrying out the analysis and more importantly while interpreting the results. His role also involves comparing the results with the failure criteria and provides suggestions based on comparison. If the results suggest failure, he should be able to explain the cause of failure of the product and also provide inputs on re-design.

His contributions as a structural analyst will also help reduce the number of tests to be performed on the product. This in turn will save time, money and man power which otherwise is required for testing.

This role can be compared with ‘Analysis’ job function in the text book where an analysis engineer uses mathematical models and computational tools (FEM in the above case) to provide the necessary information (like cause of failure and input on redesign in the above example) to the design, development and research engineers to help them perform their function.
