Chapter 2, Problem 1CT
Summary Introduction
To determine:
The reason that the transformation of lead (atomic number 82) into gold (atomic number 79) by the alchemists was unsuccessful.
Introduction:
Atoms are defined as the basic units of matter. An atom consists of a central core called nucleus. Protons are the positively charged particles in an atom that occupy the nucleus. The uncharged particles present in the nucleus of an atom are called neutrons. Negatively charged particles that rotate around the atom's nucleus are called electrons.

Size: 63 cm Chromosomal Analysis: Plant body is diploid—chromosome number of 44. Lignin test: Positive Cuticle: Present Leaves: Present—large with branched veins. Underside has sori (containing haploid spores). Roots: Present—branch from the inside. Stem: Present—vascular tissue (xylem & phloem) present. Life History: Diploid sporophyte dominant generation.
