Concept explainers
Interpretation: Characteristic properties of matter need to be explained.
Concept introduction: Matter is defined as anything that has mass and takes up space or has volume.
Matter has characteristic properties that can be divided into physical and chemical properties.
Answer to Problem 1A
Two characteristic properties are solubility and reactivity.
Explanation of Solution
Each depending upon its nature, dissolves, slightly dissolves or do not dissolves in various solvent. The solubility can be expressed in
Matter is made up of atoms. Each atom has unique electronic configuration. Atoms through various types of bonds combine to form matter. Hence, each matter has unique ability to react with water, acids, bases, and oxygen etc. Reactivity will depends on the type atoms, bonds and intermolecular forces involved.
Thus, the two characteristic properties are solubility and reactivity.
