The normal platelet count in males is 135,000-317,000 cells per milliliter and in females 157,000 to 371,000 cells per milliliter. A low platelet value can result from internal bleeding and loss of blood. The platelets are crucial in the blood clotting as they form platelet plug at the site of injury and stops the bleeding to prevent blood loss.
