GO Adiabatic wind. The normal airflow over the Rocky Mountains is west to east. The air loses much of its moisture content and is chilled as it climbs the western side of the mountains, When it descends on the eastern side, the increase in pressure toward lower altitudes causes the temperature to increase. The flow, then called a chinook wind, can rapidly raise the air temperature at the base of the mountains. Assume that the air pressure p depends on altitude y according to p = p0 exp (−ay), where p0 = 1.00 atm and a = 1.16 × 10−4 m−1. Also assume that the ratio of the molar specific heats is

- An airplane passenger has 100cm3 of air in his stomach just before the plane takes off from a sea-level airport. What volume will the air have at cruising altitude if cabin pressure drops to 7.50×104 Pa?Assume that the temperature of the air in the stomach remains constant.arrow_forwardDuring a plant visit, it was noticed that a 12-m-long section of a 10-cm-diameter steam pipe is completely exposed to the ambient air. The temperature measurements indicate that the average temperature of the outer surface of the steam pipe is 75°C when the ambient temperature is 5°C. There are also light winds in the area at 10 km/h. The emissivity of the outer surface of the pipe is 0.8, and the average temperature of the surfaces surrounding the pipe, including the sky, is estimated to be 0°C. Determine the amount of heat lost from the steam during a 10-h-long work day. Steam is supplied by a gas-fired steam generator that has an efficiency of 80 percent, and the plant pays $1.05/therm of natural gas. If the pipe is insulated and 90 percent of the heat loss is saved, determine the amount of money this facility will save a year as a result of insulating the steam pipes. Assume the plant operates every day of the year for 10 h. State your assumptions.arrow_forwardIn 1992, a Danish study concluded that a standard toy balloon, made from latex and filled with helium, could rise to 10,000 m (where the pressure is 1/3 of that at sea level) in the atmosphere before bursting. In the study, a number of balloons were filled with helium, and then placed in a chamber maintained at −20°C. The pressure in the chamber was gradually reduced until the balloons exploded, and then the researchers determined the height above sea level corresponding to that pressure. Assume each balloon was filled with helium at +20°C and at about atmospheric pressure. Determine the balloon's volume just before it exploded, if its volume when it was first filled was 500 cm3.arrow_forward
- An open-closed pipe of length L = 25 m contains air at atmospheric pressure. It is thrust vertically down, closed-end on top, into a freshwater lake until the water rises halfway up in the pipe. What is the depth h of the lower end of the pipe? Assume that the temperature is the same everywhere and does not change.arrow_forwardAn air bubble has a volume of 1.50 cm3 when it is released by a submarine 100 m below the surface of a lake. What is the volume of the bubble when it reaches the surface? Assume the temperature and the number of air molecules in the bubble remain constant during its ascent.arrow_forwardAt 28 m below the surface of the sea (density of 1476 kg/m³), where the temperature is 6°C, a diver exhales an air bubble having a volume of 0.5 cm³. If the surface temperature of the sea is 22 C, what is the volume of the bubble immediately 3 before it breaks the surface? The acceleration .2 of gravity is 9.8 m/s² and the atmospheric pressure is 1.02 × 10° Pa. 3 Answer in units of cm°.arrow_forward
- Suppose that air in the human lungs has a temperature of 37°C, and the partial pressure of water vapor has a value of 5.5 x 103 Pa. What is the relative humidity in the lungs? Consult the vapor pressure curve for water that accompanies this problem. Express your answer as a percentage with no units.arrow_forward´Suppose that air in the human lungs has a temperature of 37 °C, and the partial pressure of water vapor has a value of 5.5 × 10' Pa. What is the relative humidity in the lungs? Consult the vapor pressure 77. curve for water that accompanies Problem 75.arrow_forwardA pipe of length L = 25.0 m that is open at one end contains air at atmospheric pressure. It is thrust vertically into a freshwater lake until the water rises halfway up in the pipe . What is the depth h of the lower end of the pipe? Assume that the temperature is the same everywhere and does not change.arrow_forward
- 1) A beachcomber finds a corked bottle containing a message. The air in the bottle is at atmospheric pressure and a temperature of 30.3°C. The cork has a cross-sectional area of 2.10 cm2. The beachcomber places the bottle over a fire, figuring that the increased pressure will push out the cork. At a temperature of 99°C the cork is ejected from the bottle. (a) What was the pressure in the bottle just before the cork left it?(b) What force of friction held the cork in place? Neglect any change in the volume of the bottle. 2) A tire contains air at a gauge pressure of 5.17 104 Pa at a temperature of 25.0°C. After nightfall, the temperature drops to -10.0°C. Find the new gauge pressure in the tire. (Recall that gauge pressure is absolute pressure minus atmospheric pressure. Assume constant volume.)arrow_forwardThe classic Goodyear blimp is essentially a helium balloon— a big one, containing 5700 m3 of helium. If the envelope and gondola have a total mass of 4300 kg, what is the maximum cargo load when the blimp flies at a sea-level location? Assume an air temperature of 20°C.arrow_forwardAn automobile moving through the air causes the air velocity (measured with respect to the car) to decrease and fill a larger flow channel. An automobile has an effective flow channel area of 3 m2 . The car is traveling at 90 km/h on a day when the barometric pressure is 70 cm of mercury and the temperature is 20°C.arrow_forward
