Chapter 19, Problem 5CT
When you decide to breed your Labrador retriever Molly and sell the puppies, you discover that two of Molly’s four siblings have developed a hip disorder that is traceable to the action of a single recessive allele. Molly herself shows no sign of the disorder. If you breed Molly to a male Labrador that does not carry the recessive allele, can you assure a purchaser that the puppies will also be free of the condition? Explain your answer.

YOUR SISTER DIED FROM TAY-SACHS DISEASE, INHERITED AS A RECESSIVE ALLELE (t). you're married and planning to start your family. you're worried about the disease and decide to have genetic testing to see if you or your spouse is a carrier of the tay-sachs allele. the test results show that you're a carrier of the allele, but your spouse isn't. what is the probability that you and your spouse will have a child with tay-sachs disease? show your work.
As seen in the photo, Labradors come in three colors-- black, brown and yellow. What is the genetic basis for these different coat colors? One gene produces melanin, a pigment which is deposited in the dog's fur and makes the color dark. With this gene, allele B (black) is dominant to allele b. Only in the case of a recessive homozygote (bb) will the dog's phenotype be brown. The regulatory gene is separate from the melanin gene but it acts as a switch, either turning the melanin gene on or turning it off. Allele E is dominant and allows for the melanin to be deposited in the dog's fur ("on" switch), but if the switch gene is a recessive homozygote, the melanin is blocked ("off" switch) and a yellow dog is the result!
1. Two other Labradors mate and produce puppies. Their genotypes are Bbee and BbEe. What color are each parent and what are the phenotypic rations of their offspring in the F1 Generation? Show your work with a Punnett square.
A couple named Bob and Brené have 2 children: Angela (female) and Arnold (male). Arnold has sickle cell anemia, a disorder that arises from two recessive alleles of the beta globin gene.Genetic tests have revealed that Bob’s father Denzel has the recessive allele, but Bob’s mother Diane does not. Brené’s father Charlie does not have the recessive allele and her mother Candie was never tested, so we don’t know her genotype.A) Draw out the pedigree for this family and indicate each person’s name. Write out all the possible genotypes for each person (use “A” to represent a dominant allele of the gene and “a” to represent a recessive allele of the gene) and the probability that each person is each of those genotypes.

- Armin and Annie are going to have a baby. Annie has dimples in her cheeks (a dominant trait), while Armin does not. You know that Annie's father has dimples in both cheeks, while her mother does not. Her mother must have the recessive trait. Annie's father has the dominant trait, but you don’t know if he is a homozygote or heterozygote. But you still know what Annie’s genotype must be because Annie must have a recessive allele since that is all she could have inherited from her mother. Since Annie has a dimples you know she inherited a dominant allele from her father. What are the chances Armin and Annie’s baby will have dimples? - Albinism is a recessive disorder where there is a lack of melanin. Andrea and her husband Claude both have normal skin pigmentation. Andrea’s mother has the albino phenotype, but her father and her brother do not (normal pigmentation). Claude’s parents are both normal, but he has a sister who has the condition (is albino). Answer the following questions If Andrea and Claude are carriers for the albino allele, what is the probability that they have an albino child? - Draw a punnett square for each problem. Please be careful to notice whether a trait is homozygous or heterozygous. If a homozygous albino rabbit and a homozygous brown rabbit are bred, what will be the color ratio of the first generation? Answer:___________brown _____________tan______________white 2.
