Concept introduction:

The carbon dioxide is generated by the body cells as a byproduct of cellular respiration. The carbon dioxide from the cells diffuses into the blood capillaries due to the difference in the partial pressure (higher in body cells and lower in the blood capillaries).

The carbon dioxide is transported from body cells to lungs in three ways, as dissolved in blood plasma, as bounded to hemoglobin or as part of bicarbonate ions. About 70 % of the carbon dioxide that diffuses into the blood capillaries is carried as bicarbonate ions.
