Summary Introduction

To explain: The difference between milder and severe form of disease caused by presence of one and two defective copies of glucokinase gene respectively.

Introduction:

One isozyme of hexokinase is glucokinase. Glucokinase is an enzyme which catalyzes phosphorylation of glucose. Phosphorylation of glucose is the first reaction in glycolysis. Glucokinase is present in pancreas and liver. When glucose is present in high amounts in the cell, it converts it into glucose-6-phosphate, which enters glycolysis.
