Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The types of foods that are the main dietary source of saturated fats should be identified.
Concept Introduction:
The type of fat containing a large number of fatty acid molecules with single bonds is known as saturated fat. Saturated fats are considered “bad fats” because these are unhealthy. Saturated fats increase the amount of cholesterol in our body and this causes heart diseases. For this reason, we should avoid foods containing saturated fats.
Answer to Problem 1RQ
Solution:
The types of foods that are the main dietary source of saturated fats are as follows:
- Plant-derived sources: palm oil, copha and coconut oil, milk and cream.
- Animal-derived sources:
- Dairy foods: fat-milk, ghee, butter, cream, cheese.
- Meat and fat: read meat, fatty parts of beef, pork, lamb, lard.
- Processed foods: salami, sausages, deep-fried snacks, cakes, pastries, pies.
Explanation of Solution
It is a type of fat that contain high proportion of molecules of fatty acid without double bonds. The saturated fats are less healthy in the diet as compared to the unsaturated fats.
Saturated fats are present in both plant-derived and animal-derived foods. Processed foods are also rich in saturated fats. In order to avoid heart problems, we have to avoid or limit the intake of these foods.
