Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The presence or absence of iron filings from a cereal not fortified with iron needs to be verified through the presented demonstration.

Concept introduction:

• Iron (Fe) belongs to the transition metal series in the periodic table and plays a vital role in the human body
• It present in blood hemoglobin and is involved in the transportation of oxygen to different parts of the body
• Lack of iron in the blood results in anemia and therefore it needs to be supplemented through food. For example, through cereals fortified with food grade iron filings
• A strong magnet can be used to test the presence of iron in a mixture of iron fortified cereals
