Chapter 18.9, Problem 15CC
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The regiochemical outcome for the reaction of Chlorination of Bromobenzene has to be illustrated.

Concept Introduction:

  • Chlorination of aromatic compounds is imparting -Cl group in an aromatic ring by replacing one of its Hydrogen atoms. One of the methods used to achieve this is Cl2/AlCl3 where AlCl3 is a Lewis acid. This reaction is constructive method to impart -Cl group in an aromatic ring.
  • The term Regioselectivity is referred as preference of a particular group to occupy a specific position in a compound. In case an aromatic ring has one or more than one substituents the position in the aromatic ring occupied by the incoming electrophile depends on various factors.
  • Reactions always take place in such a way to furnish most stable products. In reactions of aromatic compounds the stability of a product is attributed to the number of resonance structures it forms.
