Explanation At the moment of fertilization, an individual’s sex can be determined. Males have a pair of chromosomes which can be referred to as X and Y, and females have two X chromosomes. Sex −determining region of the Y (SRY) gene is located on the Y chromosome and SRY determines whether the gonadal tissue in the embryo will develop into the male or female sex organs. The protein enclosed by the SRY gene acts as a regulatory mechanism to control the expression of the other genes of the body. The development of the internal and external sex organs depends on the presence or absence of the SRY gene. Gonads start developing in the seventh week. The tissue that gives rise to the gonads is called Indifferent since it can either become testes or ovaries depending on the actions of the hormones.
