Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: To determine the number and the kind of atoms in the ring portion of the Haworth structure of a D-fructose.

Concept introduction: Monosaccharides are most basic form of a carbohydrate and simplest form of sugars. They are unable to hydrolyze into simpler components. For example: D- Fructose is a monosaccharide with the chemical formula C₆H₁₂O₆. It is a six -carbon polyhydroxyketone as it contains ketonic group (C=O) as the functional group. The term D- fructose has been given to the Fischer projection structure of fructose as it determines the orientation of hydroxyl groups in the stereocenter of the fructose. If the hydroxyl group is present to the right of the last stereocenter in the structure, then it is referred to as D-Fructose. A Haworth structure is a common way to write the structural formula of a given monosaccharide in the cyclic form with a simple 3-D perspective.
