Summary Introduction

Introduction:

Anemia is a blood disorder with a reduction either in the number of RBCs or in the amount of hemoglobin in the blood.

Anemia may arise due to the following reasons: 1. insufficient RBC formation or insufficient hemoglobin formation; 2. blood loss; and 3. higher than standard RBC death. Insufficient erythropoietin production may result in decreased RBC number. Other causes may be a diet deficient in iron, folic acid, vitamin B12, or in any of the factors required for erythropoiesis.
