Insects have three thoracic (trunk) segments. While researchers have found fossils with wings on all segments, modern insects have wings or related structures on only the second and third segments. Hox gene products inhibit wing formation on the first segment. The treehopper is an exception. Its first segment has an ornate helmet that is a modified fused pair of "wings." which provide camouflage in branches, reducing risk of predation. Explain how changes in gene regulation could have led to this evolution.

- An organism has a relatively large number of Hox genes in its genome. Which of the following is true of this organism? Select one: А. Its Hox genes cooperate to bring about sexual maturity at the proper stage of development. В. Most of its Hox genes owe their existence to gene fusion events. С. The organism must have multiple paired appendages along the length of its body. D. These genes are fundamental, and are expressed in all cells of the organism. E. The organism has the genetic potential to have a relatively complex anatomy.arrow_forward. Complete genome sequences indicate that the humangenome has roughly 27,000 genes, while the worm(nematode) genome has about 22,000 genes. Explainhow the human genome with only about 20% moregenes can encode a creature enormously more complex than the worm.arrow_forwardHomeotic genes(A) encode transcription factors that control the expression ofgenes responsible for specific anatomical structures.(B) are found only in Drosophila and other arthropods.(C) are the only genes that contain the homeobox domain.(D) encode proteins that form anatomical structures in the fly.arrow_forward
- A graduate student performing studies on mutations in drosophila (fruit flies) discovered a strain of flies with a silent mutation in the gene controlling the shape of the wings. Further investigation has shown that this mutation is lethal in flies who are homozygote. Flies that are homozygote wild type or heterozygote can develop and are able to survive. What is a silent mutation (in your own words) and propose a hypothesis that could explain these observations using concepts learned. - Figure 13-7 illustrates the expression of the Ultrabithorax(Ubx) Hox protein in developing flight appendages. What is the relationship between where the protein isexpressed and the phenotype resulting from the loss ofits expression (shown in Figure 13-1)?arrow_forwardplease answer correctlyarrow_forwardHox genes are activated in specific regions of the body (e.g. back of the head) and activate other genes to build specific structures in those regions. This was largely discovered by looking at the effects of mutants of the various hox genes. What other technique would provide information on the action of hox genes? Group of answer choices A. copy hox genes and place them in bacteria B. copy hox genes and place them in plants C. completely remove all hox genes from the genome D. change the control of hox genes so that they are expressed in different body regions E. reverse the order of the hox genes on the chromosomearrow_forward
- ____ genes are regulated by segmentation genes and control the development of specific structures within particular segments. Each of these genes contains a highly conserved 180-base pair region called the ____. Examples of such genes are: ____ which regulates the development of wings in the thoracic segments and ____ which regulates the development of compound eyes and ommatidia.arrow_forwardAbsence of bicoid mRNA from a Drosophila egg leads to theabsence of anterior larval body parts and mirror-imageduplication of posterior parts. This is evidence that the productof the bicoid gene(A) normally leads to formation of head structures.(B) normally leads to formation of tail structures.(C) is transcribed in the early embryo.(D) is a protein present in all head structures.arrow_forwardYou have identified a Drosophila gene that is expressed exclusively in the odd-numbered "stripes" in the cellular blastoderm. Assuming that this gene is not redundant, what would be the most likely phenotype cause by a loss-of-function mutation in this gene? an embryo missing odd numbered segments an adult fly with a second pair of wings instead of halteres an embryo with two anterior ends an embryo missing even-numbered segments an embryo missing larval segments 3-10arrow_forward
