Concept introduction: Apoptotic protease activating factor-1 (Apaf1) is an adaptor protein to which the cytochrome c released from the mitochondria into the cytosol binds to and forms the heptamer apoptosome complex by oligomerization. The Apaf1 proteins then recruit the initiator caspase in the intrinsic pathway of apoptosis.
