Chapter 18, Problem 19Q
Summary Introduction

To explain: The contribution of the plus-end-directed motor proteins and minus-end-directed motor proteins that bind to interpolar microtubules that determine the spindle length at the overlap region of the mitotic spindle.

Concept introduction: Motor proteins are the bridges between two microtubules. Microtubules are involved in segregation of the sister chromatids during anaphase of the mitosis. There are two types of motor proteins; Dynein and Kinesin. Dynein is retrograde transport that is from positive end to the negative end or minus-end- directed motor protein. Kinesin is anterograde transport that is from the negative end to the positive end or plus-end- directed motor protein. The motor proteins play a vital role in the determination of the spindle length. The motor proteins move on the tubulin proteins that include the sub types α, β and γ tubulins that polymerize and make up the microtubule.
