Concept introduction:

The Grignard reagent is prepared by the reaction of alkyl or aryl bromide with magnesium metal in the presence of ether. The reaction of Grignard reagent with an aldehyde/ketone followed by hydrolysis yields an alcohol.

Ozonolysis is the oxidative cleavage of the double bond, where C=C bond breaks and hence formation of CO bond takes place. During oxidative cleavage, ketone or aldehyde formation takes place.

The steps followed by the hydration of alkynes are stated below:

  • The first step is the formation of enol.
  • The second step is the conversion of enol to ketone.
