Chapter 18, Problem 18.10VP

(a)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: If the material in A, C, G and I are given to being combined, along with a porous bridge and external circuit to generate an electrochemical cell that produced E, the questions based on the given figure are to be answered

Concept introduction: Electrochemical cell is a type of device which converts the chemical energy in to electrical energy. This chemical energy generates by processing the redox reaction. Redox reaction is the combination of two half reactions that are oxidation half and reduction half. Oxidation is a process in which loss of electrons take place, while in reduction gain of electrons take place.

In electrochemical cell during the process of redox reaction electrons are generated on anode and then transfer to the cathode by the external circuit. In this way we can say that the process of oxidation occurs at the anode and the process of reduction occurs at cathode and hence, electron flows.

To determine: The metal that acts as a cathode; the solution that surround it.

(b)

Interpretation Introduction

To determine: The metal that acts as an anode; the solution that surround it.

(c)

Interpretation Introduction

To determine: The effect on the light blue color of the solution when the reaction is finished.

(d)

Interpretation Introduction

To determine: An explanation for the production of E without a porous bridge or an external circuit.

(e)

Interpretation Introduction

To determine: The two images correspond to the solutions G and I, out of four images that are B, D, F, and H.

(f)

Interpretation Introduction

To determine: The particulate image that represents the copper wire with silver deposited onto it; the depiction of the fourth particulate image.

A 0.10 M solution of acetic acid (CH3COOH, Ka = 1.8 x 10^-5) is titrated with a 0.0250 M solution of magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2). If 10.0 mL of the acid solution is titrated with 10.0 mL of the base solution, what is the pH of the resulting solution?
