Fossil records are one of the strongest proofs for evolution. It was noted by researchers that across certain depths the features do not change and then all of the sudden they do (new species). This evolutionary pattern different from the gradualistic model and was explained by two models: the theory of catastrophism and punctuated equilibrium model.
