To explain: The developmental stage of neuronal myelination.
Concept introduction: Neurons, also known as nerve cells, are involved in the transduction of electrical impulses by synapses with the help of neurotransmitters in the brain and in the neuromuscular junction of the body.
Explanation of Solution
Myelin sheets are insulator sheets that cover the axon of the neurons. Neurons are classified into two types, based on the presence or absence of myelinated sheets, as myelinated neurons and non-myelinated neurons. The myelinated neurons have faster synaptic transduction than other neurons. Synaptic transduction is the way through which it communicates with the rest of the organ systems for coordinated work.
Myelination first occurs in the peripheral nervous system from the second month of gestation; it occurs in the spinal cord after 11 weeks. Myelination of neurons occurs in the brain only during the third trimester.
