Chapter 17, Problem 66RQ
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

For the solution containing 0.015 mol of AgNO3 and 0.25 mol of Ca(C2H3O2)2, the formation of precipitate is to be predicted.

Concept Introduction:

The formation of precipitate can be predicted from the concentrations of the ions of a salt in a solution and the value of Ksp for the salt. For the precipitation of a salt, the solution must be supersaturated. The value of Q, the ion product, indicates the saturation or unsaturation of the solution.

If Q>Ksp, then the solution is supersaturated and precipitate will be formed.

Sodium phosphate is added to a solution that contains 0.0069 M aluminum nitrate and 0.017 M calcium chloride. The concentration of the first ion to precipitate (either Al3+ or Ca2+) decreases as its precipitate forms. What is the concentration of this ion when the second ion begins to precipitate?
