Chapter 17, Problem 19E
Interpretation Introduction

(a)

Interpretation:

The redox reaction, Br2(l)+NaI(aq)NaBr(aq)+I2(s) is to be balanced with the help of oxidation number method.

Concept introduction:

In order to balance the redox reaction, the oxidation number of each element of both reactant and product side is first found out. Then the charge is balanced. If the charge is already balanced then that equation is balanced. If it is not the case, then multiply it by suitable coefficient in order to balance the equation.

Interpretation Introduction

(b)

Interpretation:

The redox reaction, PbS(s)+O2(g)PbO(aq)+SO2(g) is to be balanced with the help of oxidation number method.

Concept introduction:

In order to balance the redox reaction, the oxidation number of each element of both reactant and product side is first found out. Then the charge is balanced. If the charge is already balanced then that equation is balanced. If it is not the case, then multiply it by suitable coefficient in order to balance the equation.
