Chapter 17, Problem 13P

Rick Wing, salesperson for Wave Soldering Systems, Inc. (WSSI), has provided you with a proposal for improving the temperature control on your present machine. The machine uses a hot-air knife to cleanly remove excess solder from printed circuit boards; this is a great concept, but the hot-air temperature control lacks reliability. According to Wing, engineers at WSSI have improved the reliability of the critical temperature controls. The new system still has the four sensitive integrated circuits controlling the temperature, but the new machine has a backup for each. The four integrated circuits have reliabilities of .90, .92, .94, and .96. The four backup circuits all have a reliability of .90.

a) What is the reliability of the new temperature controller?

b) If you pay a premium, Wing says he can improve all four of the backup units to .93. What is the reliability of this option?

a)

Summary Introduction

To determine: The reliability of the new temperature controller.

Explanation of Solution

Draw a schematic diagram as shown in figure of the reliabilities of the four integrated circuits along with their respective back ups for the wave soldering machine given that R1=0.90 back up R1'=0.90 , R2=0.92 back up R2'=0.90 , R3=0.94 back up R3'=0.90 and R4=0.96 back up R4'=0.90

Principles Of Operations Management, Chapter 17, Problem 13P , additional homework tip 1

The combined reliabilities RC with backups for each integrated circuit can be expressed as follows

RC=(R1+R1'×(1R1))×(R2+R2'×(1R2))×(R3+R3'×(1R3))×(R4+R4'×(1R4))=(0.9+0.9×(10.9))×(0.92+0.90×(10.92))×(0.94+0.90×(10.94))×(0.96+0.90(10.96))=0.99×0.992×0.994×0.996RC=0.9723

The reliability of the temperature controller is 0.9723.

Summary Introduction

To determine: The reliability of this option.

Explanation of Solution

The reliability of each of the backup integrated circuits has been improved from 0.9 to 0.93. To calculate the reliability of the temperature controller, again draw a schematic diagram as shown in figure of the reliabilities of the four integrated circuits along with their respective back ups for the wave soldering machine given that R1=0.90 back up R1'=0.93 , R2=0.92 back up R2'=0.93 , R3=0.94 back up R3'=0.93 and R4=0.96 back up R4'=0.93

Principles Of Operations Management, Chapter 17, Problem 13P , additional homework tip 2

The combined reliabilities RC with backups for each integrated circuit can be expressed as follows

RC=(R1+R1'×(1R1))×(R2+R2'×(1R2))×(R3+R3'×(1R3))×(R4+R4'×(1R4))=(0.9+0.93×(10.9))×(0.92+0.93×(10.92))×(0.94+0.93×(10.94))×(0.96+0.93(10.96))=0.993×0.9944×0.9958×0.9972RC=0.9805

The reliability of the temperature controller improves to 0.9805 from an earlier figure of 0.9723.

IM.82 A distributor of industrial equipment purchases specialized compressors for use in air conditioners. The regular price is $50, however, the manufacturer of this compressor offers quantity discounts per the following discount schedule: Option Plan Quantity Discount A 1 - 299 0% B 300 - 1,199 0.50% C 1,200+ 1.50% The distributor pays $56 each time it places an order with the manufacturer. Holding costs are negligible (none) but they do earn 10% annual interest on all cash balances (meaning there will be a financial opportunity cost when they put cash into inventory). Annual demand is expected to be 10,750 units. When there is no quantity discount (Option Plan A, the first row of the schedule listed above), what is the adjusted order quantity? (Display your answer to the nearest whole number.) 491 Based on your answer to the previous question, and based on the annual demand as stated above, what will be the annual ordering costs?
