Chapter 16, Problem 71E
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Each of the given molecules are to be classified as a saccharide, disaccharide or an amino acid.

Concept Introduction:

Carbohydrates are polyhydroxy aldehydes or ketones, or their derivatives. A carbohydrate can be identified by the presence of the functional groups, C=O and OH along with its chain and a CH2OH group.

Carbohydrates can be classified as monosaccharides, disaccharides and polysaccharides.

Monosaccharides are composed of a single sugar unit.

Disaccharides are double-ringed structures in which two monosaccharide units are linked together.

Amino acids are the repeating structural units in a protein molecule. Amino acids consist of the amino group and the carboxylic acid group bonded to a central carbon atom. The structure of an amino acid can be represented as follows:

              H                   |NH2  C  COOH               |              R
