Chapter 16, Problem 6P
Summary Introduction

To describe: The role of each cofactor involved in the reaction catalyzed by the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex.

Introduction:

Pyruvate is obtained from glycolysis and then transported into matrix of mitochondria through mitochondrial pyruvate carrier. In mitochondrial matrix an enzyme pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDH) converts the pyruvate into acetyl-CoA. Three types of enzymes are the composition of PDH. These enzymes are E1, E2 and E3. These enzymes are found in mitochondria of eukaryotes and the cytosol of bacteria.
