To explain: The reason why cells have evolved intracellular Ca2+ stores for signaling in spite of the availability of extracellular Ca2+.
Concept introduction: The phospholyase C is activated on the plasma membrane by the GPCR. The Phospholyase C (PL C) then cleaves the inositol phospholipid on the plasma membrane, which is the phosphatidyl inositol. PL C cleaves the phosphatidyl inositol into inositol triphosphate and diacyl glycerol which are secondary messengers. Inositol triphosphate in the cytosol opens the calcium channels on the surface of the endoplasmic reticulum.
