Question
Chapter 16, Problem 28P
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
A reasonable structure for the sulfur-containing amino acid cystine is to be suggested and the structures of cysteine sulfinic acid and cysteic acid are to be shown.
Concept Introduction:
Oxidation is also be defined as loss of one or more hydrogen atoms in the structure of a compound.
Oxidation can also be defined as a gain of one or more oxygen atoms.
Amino acids containing sulfur undergo oxidation by dimerization through the sulfur atoms.
A disulfide compounds results through such an oxidation. A bond is formed between two sulfur atoms by the loss of the hydrogens attached to these sulfur atoms.
