A cup of hot coffee is not in thermal equilibrium and it can be in equilibrium when the temperature of the coffee will be same as the room temperature.

Explanation of Solution

If there is no temperature difference between two physically contacted substances or there is no heat exchange takes place between them then that condition is known as thermal equilibrium condition.

The temperature of a cup of hot coffee is different from the room temperature, so there will be exchange of heat. This condition does not satisfy the thermal equilibrium condition. Thus, the cup of coffee is not in thermal equilibrium.

The heat always transfers from higher temperature region to lower temperature region.

The temperature of the coffee is higher than the surroundings so the heat is transferred to the surroundings until the temperature of coffee becomes at the room temperature.

In this condition the temperature of the room is same as the temperature of the coffee and there will be no heat exchange. This condition is known as the thermal equilibrium condition. Thus, the cup of coffee can be in thermal equilibrium condition when the temperature of the coffee will be same as the room temperature.
