The electron count of manganese in the cation shown and manganese is coordinately unsaturated or not are to be determined.

Concept Introduction:

The electron count of the metal in a neutral complex is the sum of its valence electrons and the electrons from all the bonds with the ligands. If any of the ligands has a formal charge, then the charge on the metal is adjusted so as to match the overall charge.

If the complex is ionic, then as many electrons as the charge are added in case of an anionic complex and subtracted in case of a cationic complex.

Ideally, the electron count of a metal in a complex is 18. If it is less, then the metal is called coordinately unsaturated.
