Chapter 15.9, Problem 11P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The oxidation state and electron count of zirconium in zirconocene dichloride are to be determined. Whether zirconocene dichloride is coordinately unsaturated is to be determined.

Concept Introduction:

The electron count of the metal in a neutral complex is the sum of its valence electrons and the electrons from all the bonds with the ligands. If any of the lignads is charged, then the charge on the metal is adjusted to match the overall charge.

If the complex is ionic, then as many electrons as the charge are added in case of an anionin complex and subtracted in case of a cationic complex.

The oxidation state of the metal is determined by the charge of the ligands and the charge on the complex.

A complex is said to be coordinately unsaturated if the electron count of the central metal is less than 18.
