Answer the following questions regarding the butane ⇄ isobutane equilibrium (Kc = 2.50 at 298 K).
- (a) Is the system at equilibrium when [butane] = 0.00097 M and [isobutane] = 0.00218 M? If not, in which direction will the reaction proceed to achieve equilibrium?
- (b) Is the system at equilibrium when[butane] = 0.00075 M and [isobutane] = 0.00260M? If not, in which direction will the reaction proceed to achieve equilibrium?

3. In the following reaction, acetic acid and ethanol react together to form ethyl ethanoate
and water. Use the following concentrations under equilibrium to calculate the equilibrium
constant, K.

Acetaldehyde (CH3CHO) is an important chemical both industrially and biologically. For instance, it is a (somewhat toxic) intermediate in the body's metabolism of ethanol into acetic acid, and thus is possibly implicated in the "hungover" symptoms of someone who has had too much to drink the night before. In aqueous solution, it establishes an equilibrium with a hydrated form, shown below.
CH3CHO (aq) + H2O (l) <--> CH3CH(OH)2 (aq)
You start with an aqueous sample, already at equilibrium, with the CH3CH(OH)2 (the hydrated form) at a concentration of 2.60 M. You have no information about how much, if any, of the anhydrous form (CH3CHO) is initially in the flask. If you add 2.0 M of CH3CHO to the reaction flask, and as the equilibrium is being restored the amount of CH3CH(OH)2 changes by 1.13 M, what is the final amount of CH3CHO?
3. Answer all sections (i) - (iv).
1 mole of ethanol (C2H5OH) and 1 mole of ethanoic acid (CH;COOH) were reacted at 25 °C, in a non-
aqueous solvent, until equilibrium was reached. It was subsequently determined that 0.33 moles of
ethanol remained at equilibrium.
(i)
Write an equation for the reaction.
(ii)
Write an expression for the equilibrium constant, Kc, for the reaction and calculate its value.
Subsequently a further 3 moles of C2H5OH was added to the solution.
(ii)
Determine the concentrations of all the species present when equilibrium is restored.
