The Snyder agar (pH 4.7) medium is a differential medium consisting of glucose and a pH indicator bromocresol green that gives green color to the medium. Upon incubation, the Snyder agar culture that contains lactobacilli from the saliva produces acid by fermenting glucose and it lowers the pH to 4.4, the acidity level at which the cavities form. At pH 4.4, the color of the medium changes from green to yellow, and this indicates that the host is susceptible to developing dental caries. Thus, the Snyder agar medium acts as a differential medium for detecting dental caries.
