Concept explainers
The shape of an emblem on a fast-moving rocket ship.
Answer to Problem 31A
It is elliptical to the observers on the rocket ship.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
According to the length contraction phenomenon, the length of the moving objects looks shorter than actual to the stationary observers.
Rocket ship will be in the shape of an ellipse with the major axis facing the direction of motion. It is because when the rocket moves forward, then due to length contraction major axis shortens and looks equal to the unperturbed minor axis. This will create a perception of looking circular emblem on the rocket ship.
Conclusion:
Thus, if length contraction is neglected then the shape of the emblem on the rocket ship is elliptical in real.
