Summary Introduction

Introduction

Since 1960, the percentage of single parent families has risen, as has the divorce rate. Only about 19% of married couples have children, compared to over 40% in 1960. More people are living together instead of getting married, and same sex couples are now accepted. It is important to note that many believe that premarital cohabitation will decrease the likelihood of divorce, as couples get a “trial” period of marriage. The research, however, finds that couples who cohabit before marriage are actually more likely to experience a divorce.
