Concept explainers
(a)
Interpretation:
The product resulting from mild oxidation of 2-butanol has to be drawn.
Concept Introduction:
Oxidation:
When a carbon atom in the reactant forms more bonds to the oxygen or less bonds to hydrogen, it is said to be oxidation.
On oxidation, one
(b)
Interpretation:
The product resulting from mild oxidation of 2-methylpropanal has to be drawn.
Concept Introduction:
Oxidation:
When a carbon atom in the reactant forms more bonds to the oxygen or less bonds to hydrogen, it is said to be oxidation.
On oxidation, one functional groups changes to another functional group. On oxidation, alcohol group is converted to carbonyl group (aldehyde or ketone) and it is converted to carboxylic acid group. In mild oxidation only one conversion occurs and primary alcohol converts to aldehyde and secondary alcohol converts to ketone. The carbonyl group converts to carboxylic acid.
(c)
Interpretation:
The product resulting from mild oxidation of cyclopentanol has to be drawn.
Concept Introduction:
