Concept introduction:

The frequencies of the stretching vibrations are estimated from the type of bond and the frequency range given for that bond. Also, frequency range for the given type of bond is identified by the functional group to which that bond resembles in the molecule. An alcohol O-H stretch is typically centered near 3300 cm1 and is usually well resolved from the alkane C-H stretch bands between 2800 and 3000 cm1. A carboxylic acid O-H stretch is centered at around 3000 cm1 and can extend down to 2500 cm1, thus overlapping the alkane C-H stretches.
