Textbook Question
Chapter 15, Problem 13PS
Imagine you are on a team designing a moon base that will be self-contained and self-sustaining. Once supplied with building materials, equipment, and organisms from Earth, the base will be expected to function indefinitely. One of the members of your team has suggested that everything sent to the base be chemically treated or irradiated so that no bacteria of any kind are present. Do you think this is a good idea? Predict some of the consequences of eliminating all bacteria from an environment.

A recent study found that 480 Streptomyces strains freshly isolated from the soil are resistant to at least six different antibiotics. In fact, some isolates are resistant to 20 different antibiotic drugs. Why do you think these bacteria (which are neither pathogenic nor exposed to human use of antibiotics) are resistant to so many drugs?
What might be the implications for human bacterial pathogens?
What is the best explanation for why a bacteriostatic treatment might be chosen over a bacteriocidal treatment? Bacteriostatic treatments will eliminate all bacteria while bacteriocidal treatments will only eliminate a portion of the bacteria. Bacteriostatic treatments typically have lower toxicity to the host when compared to bacteriocidal treatments. Bacteriostatic treatments will prevent all bacterial growth, while bacteriocidal treatments will permit some bacterial growth. Bacteriostatic treatments are typically more costly than bacteriocidal treatments.

You want to harvest antibiotics from Bug B for the pharmaceutical industry. When observing a zone of inhibition around a disk, how would you to determine whether the antibiotic causing that zone was bactericidal or bacteriostatic?arrow_forwardCan you say that the microbial composition changes over time in each of the body locations? Give two pieces of evidence. Why do you think the scientists also tested the soil around the cadaver? The study was done with mice and their cadavers decomposed on soil graves in the University of Colorado Transgenic Facility. A culture of Salmonella bacteria is exposed to the same concentrations (200 mg/L) of an antibiotic for four days. The table shows the number of isolated resistant bacteria over a four-day period. - Bacterial growth depends on many environmental factors, including the temperature of the environment. Since microbes can survive in a certain range of temperatures and will thrive at a temperature, understanding these variables allows for control of their growth. This understanding can be used, for example, to preserve certain foods or to treat infections. This lab simulation will use an instrument called a spectrophotometer. This instrument quantitatively measures the amount of light that is absorbed or transmitted by molecules in solution. Microbial populations grow at different rates based on temperature. One way to measure growth is by turbidity measurements. When bacteria multiply in a broth culture they turn the clear solution cloudy, or turbid. a) in your own words explain the proper steps to Inoculate 5°C sterile broth tube using aseptic techniquearrow_forwardMicrobiologists have announced the discovery of over 30 new species of bacteria that thrive between the teeth and gums of humans. The bacteria could not be grown in the researcher's laboratories, nor were any of them ever observed via and kind of microscopy. If they couldn't culture them or see them, how could the researchers know they discovered a new species? If they couldn't examine the cells for the presence of a nucleus, how did they determine that the organisms were prokaryotes and not eukaryotes?arrow_forwardChoose the false statement: Penicillin is a ß lactam which inhibits bacterial growth by inhibiting DNA polymerase. O Resistance to ß lactamase inhibitors arises when bacteria duplicate the ß lactamase gene. O B lactamase inhibitors are prescribed together with antibiotics like penicillin in order to combat resistance to these antibiotics. Question 10 Choose the false statement below: OUsing multiple antimicrobials in combination is an ineffective strategy because they generally are redundant in effect and the chance of drug resistance will be increased. O Because of its complex structure and multiple binding sites, the ribosome is the target for multiple types of antibiotics. O Choice of an antimicrobial agent may be dependent upon the material treated as well as the susceptíbility of the microbe.arrow_forward
