Chapter 14.23, Problem 25P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The comparision of HONO-LUMO energy difference for the ππ* transition of ethylene and cis, trans-1,3-cyclooctadiene with the respective λmax values is to be determined.

Concept Introduction:

The energy of transition is related to the wavelength λmax of the absorbed radiation by Planck’s equation

ΔE=hcλmax

Here, h=6.626×1034 m2 kg/s is the Planck constant, c=3×108 m/s is the speed of the light, and λmax is the maximum wavelength (between HOMO and LUMO).

The highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) in an alkene is the π bonding molecular orbital. The lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) is π* antibonding molecular orbital.

(a) Describe the molecular geometry expected for 1,2,3-butatriene (H2C=C=C=CH2). (b) Two stereoisomers are expected for 2,3,4-hexatriene (CH3CH=C=C=CHCH3). What should be the relationship between these two stereoisomers?
3. The heat of hydrogenation for allene, H½C = C= CH2, to yield propane is – 295 kJ/mol, and the heat of hydrogenation for a typical monosubstituted alkene such as propene is -126 kJ/mol. Is allene more stable or less stable than you might expect for a diene ? Explain.
