Concept Introduction:
Ether are compounds that contain an oxygen atom that is sandwiched between two R groups. The R groups may be alkyl, vinyl or aryl.
Common names for ethers are constructed by finding the R groups that is attached to the oxygen atom followed by adding suffix “ether”.
The two groups that are present in either side of the oxygen atom are arranged in alphabetical order. If the two alkyl groups that are attached to the oxygen atom are similar means then it is named as dialkyl ether.
If a compound has a ring with many ether groups, then they are called as cyclic polyether. These compounds are also known as crown ethers. They are named by counting the ring size and the number of oxygen atoms that are present in the ring as ether.
