Introduction:

Of the great diversity of microorganisms found in different habitats on Earth, a large majority is harmless to human beings. Microorganisms emerged on Earth much before humans and they are free-living organisms capable of surviving without humans. Many microorganisms are beneficial to humans and for the environment. However, some microorganisms have adapted to non-free-living life cycles and they cause problems for humans, plants and animals.
