The dinitrophenol or 2, 4-dintrophenol is a yellow, crystalline solid that has a sweet, musty odor. DNP was used extensively in diet pills because of the drugs have ability to greatly increase the metabolic rate. DNP has the ability to act as a protonophore, which means that they can allow the protons to leak across the inner mitochondrial membrane and thus bypass ATP synthases because of action of DNP, the ATP production will become less efficient and part of the energy that is normally produced in the body through cellular respiration is wasted as heat. When the dose of DNP increases, the energy production becomes more inefficient and the metabolic rate increases. This increases the metabolic rate that leads to the burning of fat and thus promoting the loss of fat reserves.
