Writing the alkyl yielded from alcohol followed by the acid part name, replacing ‘-noic acid’ of the acid by ‘-noate’. a. While numbering the carbons in carboxylic acids, the functional group (carboxylic) carbon is given the 1stpriority. The given compound has a substituent methyl group at carbon number 4, and thus have methylpentane as a parent alkane. The IUPAC name of the given carboxylic acid (alkanoic acid) is 4-methylpentanoic acid. The common names of a given carboxylic acid are 4-methylvaleric acid (isomer of a pentanoic acid which is derived from the roots of valerian plant) and isocaproic acid. b. As shown in the figure, the chlorine atoms are attached to the carbon numbered 3 and 5 which are both at meta position with respect to the functional group.
