Chapter 14, Problem 14.27P

An experiment is designed to measure the partition coefficient, K, associated with the transfer of a pharmaceutical product through a polymer material. The partition coefficient is defined as the ratio of the densities of the species of interest (the pharmaceutical) on either side of an interface. In the experiment, liquid pharmaceutical ( p p = 1250 kg/m3) is injected into a hollow polymer sphere of inner and outer diameters D i = 5 mm and D 0 = 5.1 mm, respectively. The sphere is exposed to convective conditions for which the density of the pharmaceutical at the outer surface is zero. After one week, the sphere’s mass is reduced by Δ M = 8.2 mg. What is the value of the partition coefficient if the mass diffusivity is D A B = 0.2 × 10 11 m 2 /s ?

At 250C, the interfacial tension between water and n – octyl alcohol is 8.50 dyne/cm. if the surface tension of n-octyl is 27.53 dyne/cm and that of the water is 72.75 dyne/cm, predict whether water spreads on the alcohol by calculating a) Work of cohesion of n-octyl b) Work of adhesion and c) the spreading coefficient of water on the alcohol. Will alcohol spread on water?
WASTEWATER ENGINEERING: A wastewater sample has 7.5 x 105 CFU per liter. The allowable fecal coli form concentration is 3500 CFU/L. What should be the length of carrying this wastewater if the flow velocity of the wastewater is 0.75 m/s and the reaction rate constant of decomposition of fecal coliform is 0.24 min-1.
5. The sketch shows a cylindrical hollow fiber with membrane walls. Species 'A' is undergoing steady-state diffusion through the membrane wall where its concentrations at the inner and outer membrane walls are CAI, and CA2, respectively. It can be assumed that the membrane wall eliminates any bulk diffusion effects and that the diffusion flux follows Fick's Law with a membrane diffusion coefficient, DAM- (a) Solve for the concentration profile of 'A' in the membrane wall in terms of the dimensions of the fiber and concentrations at R₁ and R₂. (b) Solve for the molar flux of 'A' leaving the outer wall of the membrane. XA2 XB2 FIBER WALL *****
