The π electrons of benzene attack the carbocation and cause it to undergo substitution followed by deprotonation of cyclohexadienyl cation.

The double bond at benzylic position can be introduced by the benzylic bromination with N-bromosuccinimide(NBS) followed by dehydrohalogenation.
