Question
Chapter 13.5, Problem 36P
Summary Introduction
To determine: The barber who will earn more.
Introduction: In order to predict the waiting time and length of the queue, queueing model will be framed. Queueing theory is the mathematical model that can be used for the decision-making process regarding the resources required to provide a service.

An average of 36 customers per hour arrives at a bank branch office (Poisson arrival)
and wait in a single line to be served by the first available teller. The average time for
each teller to service a customer is 4 minutes (exponentially distributed). Each teller
earns $160/day and the bank branch office assesses a waiting cost of $50/day that a
customer waits in the system.
How many tellers should be on duty in this bank branch office to minimize the total
cost of this waiting line system?

Each airline passenger and his or her luggage must be checked to determine whether he or she is carrying weapons onto the airplane. Suppose that at Gotham City Airport, an average of 10 passengers per minute arrive (inter-arrival times are exponential). To check passengers for weapons, the airport must have a checkpoint consisting of a metal detector and baggage X-ray machine. Whenever a check-point is in operation, two employees are required. A checkpoint can check an average of 12 passengers per minute (the time to check a passenger is exponential). Under the assumption that the airport has only one checkpoint, answer the following questions:a. What is the probability that a passenger will have to wait before being checked for weapons? b. On the average, how many passengers are waiting in line to enter the checkpoint? c. On the average, how long will a passenger spend at the checkpoint?
A Northwest Airlines ticket counter forecasts that 30 people per hour will need to check in. It takes an average of 1.5 minutes to service a customer. Assume that interarrival times and service times are exponential and that all customers wait in a single line for the first avaliable agent. If we want the average time a customer spends in line and in service to be 3 minutes or less, how many ticket agents should be on duty?

- Car owners fill up when their tanks are exactly half full. At the present time, an average of 8.5 cars/hr arrive at a single-pump gas station. It takes an average of 3.68 minutes to service a car. Suppose that a gas shortage occurs and panic buying takes place. All car owners now purchase gas when their tanks are exactly 3/4 full. Since each car is putting less gas into the tank for each visit, the average service time has been reduced to 2.54 minutes. Assume that arrival and departure rates are both exponential. What is the difference in length of queue before and after the shortage scenario, in terms of vehicles? answer an absolute value, and in four decimal places.arrow_forwardBOBO Van is a start-up company which develops an app to receive orders from customers and provide delivery service. It owns one single vehicle. Two workers form a crew. The whole crew, which includes both workers working as a team, is needed to complete the delivery service. If an order arrives while the crew is working on another order, the arriving order needs to join the waiting line for service. - An average of 90 patrons per hour arrive at a hotel lobby(interarrival times are exponential), waiting to check in. At present, there are 5 clerks, and patrons are waiting in a singleline for the first available clerk. The average time for a clerkto service a patron is 3 minutes (exponentially distributed).Clerks earn $10 per hour, and the hotel assesses a waitingtime cost of $20 for each hour that a patron waits in line.a Compute the expected cost per hour of the currentsystem.b The hotel is considering replacing one clerk with an Automatic Clerk Machine (ACM). Management esti-mates that 20% of all patrons will use an ACM. An ACM takes an average of 1 minute to service a patron. It costs $48 per day (1 day 8 hours) to operate anACM. Barber 1 charges $18 per haircut and takes an average of 20 minutes to complete a haircut. Barber 2 charges $13 per haircut and takes 15 minutes to complete a haircut. On average 12 potential customers arrive per hour at each barbershop. Of course, a potential customer becomes an actual customer only if he or she finds that the shop is not full. There is one server. Customers arrive at the rate of 12 per hour. Using the current technology in place, the server can process 15 customers per hour. Upgrades to the technology, as listed below, would allow the server capacity to increase. For example, an expenditure of $1,000 would allow the server to process 16 customers per hour. The manager wishes to insure that the time the average customer must spend in the system is less than or equal to 10 minutes. What is the minimum amount of money the manager must spend on technology to meet that standard? $1,000 service is 16 customers per hour $3,000 service is 17 customers per hour $5,000 service is 18 customers per hour $7,000 service is 20 customers per hour $10,000 service is 22 customers per hour…arrow_forward
- Suppose a coffee shop order and fulfillment process is configured simply as a single queue with two steps: wait and service. Customers enter, wait their turn, and then are served, by placing and receiving their order all at once. Suppose that an average of 10 customers per hour enter the coffee shop while the shop is open. On average, there are two customers waiting in line to place their orders. It takes an average of 2 minutes to go through the service step, that is, it takes 2 minutes to complete the second step of placing and receiving the order. In steady state, O The average wait time before placing an order is 12 minutes. O The average time between customer arrivals is 5 minutes. O None of the answers are correct. [Assume that the arrival rate is the same throughout the day without peak and off-peak considerations and that there is only one ATM machine at that location] 1. Calculate average waiting time for ATM user at the BBT location 2. Calculate average length of queue at the ATM location (i.e. average numbers of customers waiting for service)? 3. What is the probability that an arriving customer has no waiting time to use the ATM? 4. BBT wants to cut the average waiting time in half without necessarily adding another ATM machine.
