Chapter 13.3, Problem 13P

A recipe for gingerbread makes a 9-in.-by-9-in.-by-2-in. pan full of gingerbread. Suppose that you want to use this recipe to make a gingerbread house. You decide that you can either use a 10-in.-by-15-in. pan ora 11-in.-by-17-in. pan, and that you can either make a whole recipe or half of the recipe of gingerbread.

  1. Which pan should you use, and should you make the whole recupe orjust halfa recipe, if you want the gingerbread to be between 1 4 in. and 1 2 in. thick? Explain.
  2. .Draw a careful diagram showing how you would cut the gingerbread into parts to assemble into a gingerbread house. Indicate the different parts of the house (front, back, roof, etc.). When assembled, the gingerbread house should look like a real three-dimensional housebut be as creative as you like in how you design it. You do not have to use every bit of the gingerbread to make the house, but try to use as much as possible.
  3. if you want to put a solid, 2-in.-tall fence around your gingerbread house so that the fence is 6 in. away from the house, what will be the perimeter of this fence? Explain.
  4. To make the fence in part (c), how many batches of gingerbread recipe will you need, and what pan (or pans) will you use? Indicate how you will cut the fence out of the pan (or pans). Explain.
