The meiosis is categorized as meiosis I and meiosis II. Meiosis-I is known as reductional division because the daughter cells produced by this contains half of the genetic material. It is divided into four phases, namely prophase I, metaphase I, anaphase I, and telophase I. Meiosis-II is known as equational division because it is similar to mitosis. It is also divided into four phases, namely prophase II, metaphase II, anaphase II, and telophase II.

We can simply say that, the allele a gamete receives for one gene does not influence or alter the effect of another allele. Gamete formation during meiosis follows law of independent assortment.
